Hello 2017!

Happy New Year, everyone!

Ok, I realize that it is four days into 2017, but I celebrated longer since my husband was off, haha. 2016 was CRAZY. I got off to a great start with selling bags, and am already diving into custom orders for 2017! I've also been testing like a crazy lady, so watch out for those blog posts coming soon.

2017 is going to be full of surprises here at S'more House! I'm expanding my custom options, coming up with a few new patterns for project bags, tweaking existing patterns, and revamping the store! Etsy is a wonderful platform, but a majority of my sales are custom orders which I end up billing through Paypal anyway so I might as well set things up here at this domain as well! It's mostly an organizational change but it'll probably be easier. We'll see.

Mostly I'm looking forward to a productive New Year! My studio space is all clean and organized, I have a new lighting set up from Robert, so I'm extra excited about taking photos indoors this winter. My usual mode is take photos outside and that doesn't always work out so well once we hit the depths of winter.

Pretty...but that's not going to work for product photos.

So Happy New Year, everyone! Stick around for some exciting news coming soon!

SewPro Chicago

So I've just gotten back from SewPro in Chicago this past weekend and I have got to say that I am SO GLAD that I went! What is SewPro, you ask? This first meeting was a gathering of designers, quilters, bag makers, bloggers, and sewists of all kinds! There were classes run by the likes of Pat Sloan, Tula Pink, Allison Glass, Mimi G, Sara Lawson, and so many others. There were panels on surface design and pattern publishing. It was a forum for all of us to connect with each other and stew and pick at each other's brains for creative and business ideas!

I'm not going to lie. I was nervous to go. I have a small Etsy shop and I take orders from Instagram, sure, but I don't consider myself a "serious business" lady. But like Alexander says in "Hamilton" there's a million things I haven't done.  I spend a lot of my days making things while living all inside my head. But being thrown into a convention of like minded individuals sounded like an appealing change so I stuffed all of my social anxiety into a sack and forged ahead!

And it was wonderful! I've made some fast friends, and handed out loads of business cards. I've learned some valuable lessons about my roadmap ahead.  I very much want to continue in my bagmaking adventures but I'd also like to get more involved with surface design.  I got to meet one of my idols, Tula Pink (and she's funny and accessible and so so smart! AND she liked my shoes!)! I'm still typing up all of my notes but I have to say that I'm so glad I jumped off of the edge of comfort and forged ahead! S'more House has a new arsenal of knowledge and a new cast of friends too and I'm excited to see what the future holds with my newly gained focus and motivation!

Well it took longer than anticipated to get all my ducks in a row (and it turns out I have a lot of ducks) but it's the first day of summer and my shop is officially OPEN! Until now I've been taking custom orders through back channels but I think this will be a lot easier on everyone. Custom listings and premade bags are available through etsy. I have an Imgur album with available fabrics for easier fabric selection. There's more premade bags to come and more custom listings will be added as I price them! Hooray! Happy Summer!

S'more House

The very first post of my incredibly new blog on my brand new website! Hooray! I guess I'll begin with "Why S'more House, Jane? That's a weird name for a website/business/whatever you're doing." The story basically is, my fella and I have always called this S'more House since we moved in together! He's the gameskeeper (of the cats) and I'm the janitor (of everything else). Seriously though, it's all honey-colored wood paneling, chocolate carpets, marshmallow walls, and we live on Graham St. If that's not enough, we have amazing bonfires in our crazy firepit every summer and s'mores are always the star of the show! And if THAT'S not enough, well tough. Home is where the heart is and my heart resides firmly in S'more House.

I seriously love this house. I moved here to freezing Michigan from sunny Florida, and this house is what's kept me from moving on. It's secluded and scenic and the perfect backdrop for all of my creative endeavors! It's even pretty in winter somehow. Since moving back here I've discovered and rediscovered my love of crafts, sewing, knitting, and painting.

So for the first post things are pretty short and sweet. I expect further entries to be about bag making, knitting stuff up, and dressmaking! I'm hoping to finally post some stuff up in my shop too!
